1. The boy in the story was going to a fair . His parents accompanied him.
2. People were going by different means .Some walked,some rode on horses, others sat, being carried in bamboo and
2. bullock carts. They were gaily clad .
3. The boy lagged behind because he got fascinated by the toys in the shops that lined the way .
4. The first thing the child was attracted to was a toy . However he could not get it.
5. A group of dragon-flies were bustling about on their gaudy purple wings, intercepting the flight of a lone black bee or butterfly in search of sweetness from the flowers.
6. As the child entered the grove , a shower of young flowers fell upon him , and, forgetting his parents, he began to gather the raining petals in his hands. But right then he heard the cooing of doves and ran towards his parents, shouting, “The dove! The dove!” The raining petals dropped from his forgotten hands .
7. The child wanted in the fair a toy , burfi , a garland of gulmohur ,a balloon, the music of the snake - charmer and a ride on the round -about . Je could not ask his parents for them because he knew that they would not give him those things.
8. When he lost his parents he became panicked .Tears rolled down from his eyes, hot and fierce; his flushed face was convulsed with fear . He ran in all directions, knowing not where to go. He wailed “Mother, Father .”
9. Finally he went to the temple . At its entrance there was huge crowd of people jostling with each other . He tried to thrust his way between their feet but got stuck . When he was about to be trampled , he shrieked at his highest pitch .
10. Coming under the feet of the crowd the child shrieked and a kind man heard it . He lifted him up in his arms and tried to comfort him.
11. In order to soothe the child the man took him to the round-about , the snake-charmer , the balloon shop , the flower seller and the sweet shop .
12. The man asked the child ,“How did you get here, child? Whose baby are you?” . The child wept more bitterly than ever now and only cried, “I want my mother, I want my father!”
13. After losing his parents , the child repeated , " I want my mother , I want my father!"
