 Lesson 2 - The Sound of Music ( part 1 )


[A] Comprehension

1

(I) Evelyn's mother noticed that something was wrong with Evelyn when she was eight.

(II) Her mother came to know that Evelyn had some hearing problem when she saw that she did not move even after being called by name while she was waiting to play piano .

(III) The name of Evelyn's mother was Isabel Glennie.

(IV) Evelyn's headmistress advised her parents to have her fitted with hearing aids and also to send her to a school for the deaf .

(I) One day Evelyn noticed a girl playing a xylophone .

(II) She had interest in music and she decided that she wanted to play xylophone . 

(III) Most of the teachers discouraged her but percussionist Ron Forbes encouraged her.

(IV) He advised her to try to sense the sound of music some other way instead of listening to it through her ears .

(I) According to Evelyn you will get there if you work hard and you know where you are going.

(II) She got right to the top , the world's most sought after multi percussionist . 

(III) She had a mastery of some thousand instruments.

(I) She explains of music that it pours in through every part of her body. It tingles in the skin , her cheekbones and even in her hair .

[B] Short answer type questions ( in about 25 words )

  1.  The slight girl was seen on a busy underground train platform . She was seventeen . She was nervous yet excited because it was her first day at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London.

  2. This aspiring musician faced a  challenge of being profoundly deaf . It was a bigger challenge than most .

  3. When she, at an age of eight , was waiting to play the piano they  called her name but she didn't move Then it was first noticed that there was something wrong with her. Her mother discovered it.

  4. She managed to conceal her growing deafness for quite a while.

  5. When Evelyn was eleven , it was discovered that her hearing was severely impaired as a result of gradual nerve damage.

  6. When she noticed a  girl playing a xylophone , she decided that she wanted to play it.

  8. She auditioned for the Royal Academy of Music and scored one of the highest marks in the history of the academy.

  9. She managed to learn two more additional languages- French and Japanese.

  10. When she removes her shoes on a wooden platform the vibrations pass through her bare feet and up her legs .

  11. She was presented ,in 1991 , with the Royal Philharmonic Society's prestigious Soloist of the Year Award.

  12. She has given inspiration to the handicapped . The people who look to her say ," If she can do it, I can ."


[C] Long answer type questions . 

  1. We come to know about the girl for the first time when she was waiting for her train on an underground platform. She was a slight looking girl of seventeen . She was going to the Royal Academy of Music to pursue her music career . As it was her first  day there she was both nervous and excited. It was more challenging for her because she was profoundly deaf .

  2. Percussionist Ron Forbes spotted Evelyn's potential . He tuned two large drums to different notes and asked her to sense the sound some other way rather than through ears . It worked and she was able to feel the higher drum from the waist up and lower one from the waist down . Through repeated exercise she became able to to sense certain notes in different parts of her body . She learned to open her mind and body to sounds and vibrations.

  3. Evelyn's achievement as percussionist was phenomenal . She became the world's most - sought after multipercussilnist with a mastery of some thousand instruments and hectic international schedule . In 1991 she bagged the Royal Philharmonic Society's prestigious Soloist of the Year Award . She became a shining inspiration for deaf children and other people.

  4. Evelyn hears music through every part of her body - skin , cheekbones, hair etc . While playing the xylophone she can sense its sound passing up the stick into her fingertips. While playing the drums on a wooden platform she can feel the vibrations pass through her bare feet and up her legs.
