Lesson - 2 . Adventures of Toto
1.Grandfather bought Toto from a tonga-driver . He had to pay five rupees.
2.Toto ,the monkey, looked pretty. He had bright eyes sparkled with mischief beneath deep-set eyebrows . His teeth were a pearly white . But his hands looked dried-up as though they had been pickled in the sun for many years. Yet his fingers were quick and wicked and his tail added to his good looks .
3. He could use his tail to hang from a branch and scoop up any delicacy that might be out of reach of his hands.
4. To keep his presence a secret from the grandmother , Toto was kept in a little closet opening into the writer's bedroom.
5. Besides wrenching the peg out of the socket , Toto also tore off the wallpaper and tore into shreds the school blazer of the writer.
6.There were many pets at the servants quarters -a tortoise, a pair of rabbits, a tame squirrel and a goat. The monkey would not allow any of his companions to sleep at
night.
7.Grandfather took Toto to Saharanpur in a big black canvas kit-bag.
8.His efforts to get out only made the bag roll about on the floor or occasionally jump into the air . Such an exhibition attracted a
curious crowd of onlookers on the Dehra Dun railway platform.
9.When Toto was finally accepted by Grandmother he was given a comfortable home in the stable .
10. Toto had fastened on to the long ears of Nana , the donkey, with his sharp little teeth.
11. Toto would cunningly test the temperature of water with his hands and then would put his legs one by one into the bucket . Having completely soaked his body in the warm water he would rub soap all over his body . Then again he would take a dip until the water got cold.
12. If someone laughed at the performance , he would refuse to go on with the bath .
13.When he saw a large kitchen kettle on the fire to boil for tea ,he got in to take a bath. He remained there enjoying it initially but jumping with the increasing temperature until grandmother hauled him half boiled.
14.Toto threw a plate at the grandmother and a glass of water in the face of the aunt .
15. Toto escaped with the dish of pullao to a jackfruit tree . He threw down the dish and broke it into hundreds of pieces after eating up it's pullao.
16. Grandfather got rid of Toto by selling him back to his previous owner , the tonga driver , just for three rupees.
